How do I approach the subject of relocation in my cover letter and resume? AprilGreat question, April Before you update your resume and cover letter for a long-distance job search, I suggest doing some online research to determine which job markets are healthy and have a decent number of job openings in your desired field. Its not enough to know you want t o relocate to somewhere warm search your favorite job boards to get a better sense of which locations not only meet your personal needs but also have a high demand for professionals in your line of work. Your current location will be less of an issue when your talents are in high demand.Once youve narrowed your search to a few locations, dig a little deeper to determine which is the right place for you to live. Reach out to friends and friends-of-friends who live in the area and can give you the inside scoop on what its like to live and work there. If possible, visit each city to get a feel for each area. Also, make aya you can afford to move to each location. Use resources like Salary.coms customized salary reports and NerdWallets cost of living calculator to estimate the salary range you can expect to earn in each location and determine if it will be enough for you to live comfortably in that area. How to discuss relocation in your resumeApply these relocation tips to your resume a nd LinkedIn profile, where applicable.Edit the location detailsIf youve narrowed your search to a specific locale, include the city, state, and zip code in your contact details at the top of your resume. If you havent worked in this city before, consider removing the location information for your employers within your resumes Work History section.Update your resume professional summaryTake advantage of the professional summary section of your resume, space previously reserved for your resume objective statement, to address your desire to relocate. Include a blurb similar to the following toward the end of your summary Interested in relocating to the greater location area. You can take it a step further and mention that youre willing to relocate to location at own expense to demonstrate to employers how serious you are about making such a move. If youre still on the fence about relocating for work, leave a line like this out until youve done your research and found a specific locatio n that interests you and is a realistic option, given your career and the locations current job market.Emphasize other aspects of your employersConsider adding a one-line company description underneath each employer listed on your resume that highlights the aspects each has in common with the companies youre currently targeting for your job search. This could be anything from the companys size to its industry to the types of customers it serves. The idea is to downplay the location of each employer by emphasizing other attributes that are relevant to your desired employer.Related How to Build an Employer Dream List for Your Job SearchHow to discuss relocation in your cover letterYour cover letter and the summary section of your LinkedIn profile are great places to add personal details about your desire to relocate that would seem out of place on a resume. While technology is making the world smaller and smaller, employers still tend to favor local candidates over out-of-towners when all else is equal. Why? Because non-local candidates typically cost more money to hire (i.e. relocation costs) and are often considered more of a flight risk. Use your cover letter to dispel any false assumptions an employer may have about your decision to relocate.Highlight your historyIf you previously worked or studied in the area, or if you have family living there, incorporate these facts into your cover letter. This information shows employers that youre already familiar with the location and will be comfortable living there. In other words, youve already begun to lay down roots and are less likely to jump ship as a result.Demonstrate your researchIf you havent lived in the location before, show the employer that youve done your homework on the area. When explaining why youre interested in the opportunity, drop in a detail or two that demonstrates what youve learned about the location and why it makes the position more appealing. By exhibiting the research youve done on the ar ea, youre showing the employer how serious you are about relocating.Indicate your familys supportWhile you dont necessarily want to go into the nitty-gritty details of your family, it doesnt hurt to mention that My family and I are committed to relocating to location to show your familys support of the move. If youre relocating because your spouse or partner was transferred to this location for work, be sure to specify this in your cover letter, as it may alleviate any fears the employer has about your genuine interest in relocation. How to approach relocation in your cover letter and resumeOnce youve updated your job-application materials to demonstrate your commitment to relocation, focus on developing a strong network of connections in your desired city to help you sidestep the ATS software and put your application directly into the hands of the recruiter or hiring manager. Pros and Cons of CAD
Pros and Cons of CAD Pros and Cons of CAD Pros and Cons of CADAn informal poll by Mechanical Engineering of approximately 25 engineers revealed that they have mixed feelings about CAD. Their comments inspired us to ask three prominent CAD users what they perceive to be the positives and negatives of the software today. All three agreed that CADs ease of use is both its best quality and its greatest drawback. Less experienced engineers can create designs that look perfectly manufacturable on screen, but cant actually be made. For instance, CAD allows users to simply mate two parts. They snuggle right up against each other, said William Durfee, a professor of mechanical engineering and director of the design education department at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In real life, theyd need to be welded, or adhesively bonded, or fastened with some type of fastenerits easy to forget that on the screen. With todays surfacing and other improved computer-aided design tools, engineers can more easily depict curved surfaces.Gordon Lewis, a principal at DaTuM 3D, a product-development company, agreed. We have customers come in here and say, My brothers grandson did this design for mecan you guys make it? We have to say, Sorry. It cant be built. The flip side is that the software can make a bad engineer a good one. Youre less likely to make a bad part than you were before, says Bernhard Bettig, a professor of mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University. The same systems that give their less-experienced colleagues a leg up, give veteran engineers a bedrock technology to support their advanced designs. Aware of how a design will be made and assembled, theyre much less likely to come up with a part or product that faces trouble on the manufacturing side. As they create a design, they run a movie in their head about how it could be made, Durfee said. And then there are the designs themselves. In the early days, everybody tried to use CAD tools like theyd used their drawing boards. They couldnt do it because CAD had such restrictions, Lewis said. Twenty years ago, you saw designs that were very boxy because of the limitation of the tools. Today, we binnensee free-flowing shapes, contours, and blended angles.CAD has helped change mouse shape. The yellow box mouse (above) is from a mid-1960s Xerox Alto II XM computer. A contemporary mouse (below) shows the curved surfaces CAD design allows.Other novices, frustrated because they cant make such shapes, fall into a pattern of using the patterns that are easiest to carry out in CAD. You can whip up a rectangle with round things on it in 20 seconds, because those buttons are right there, Durfee said. CAD has evolved so its easier to make a double-curved surface than five years ago, but itll be a while before itll be truly easy to do. Thats why some engineers still sculpt a design in clay before bringing it into CAD.And digital design is slower than sketching. You fire up the CAD applicatio n and three minutes later youre making a rectangle. Twenty minutes later, youre coming up with your first idea, Durfee said. A good designer could come up with 100 fledgling ideas in that time.Durfee lauds the ease of documentation. An engineer fresh from a brainstorming session may have 100 ideas. Once CAD files, theyre automatically archived and documented. Once youve created something in a CAD package, youve committed it to a paper trail, Durfee said. Thats huge in things like medical design, where you have to track the process from day one. The average engineer isnt that excited about documentation, so its nice to have a system that does it for him.Drawbacks aside, Durfee, Bettig, and Lewis agreed that its an exciting time for CAD.Whenever hes frustrated by the limitations of the software, Lewis remembers his early days in industry. I can make and cost out anything you want to build, all on my laptop, he said. Its really Buck Rogers.Adapted from Pros and Cons of CAD, by Jean Thi lmany, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, September 2006.Twenty years ago, you saw designs that were very boxy because of the limitation of the tools. Today, we see free-flowing shapes, contours, and blended angles.Gordon Lewis, a principal at DaTuM 3D

The scientific process to heal any emotional trauma
The scientific process to heal any emotional traumaThe scientific process to heal any emotional traumaIn Greek mythology, Medusa was a monster, often described as a winged human female with living venomous snakes in place of hair. Those who gazed upon Medusas face would turn to stone. In a similar way, people who go through hard experiences can turn to stone, emotionally. As trauma expert Dr. Peter Levine has said, It is how we respond to a traumatic event that determines whether trauma will be a cruel and punishing Medusa turning us into stone, or whether it will be a spiritual teacher taking us along vast and uncharted pathways.Weve all experienced trauma, whether we think we have or not. According to Dr. Lisa Firestone (emphasis mine)A trauma can be defined as any significant negative event or incident that shaped us. It can emerge from any impactful instance that made us feel bad, scared, hurt or ashamed. By this definition, we have all experienced some degree of trauma in the proce ss of growing up.Having suppressed emotions is another way of saying we have unresolved trauma in our lives. But what does this actually mean? How people become emotionally stuckIf youve had a hard experience in your past where something negative happened, or where you failed miserably, you might never step far outside your comfort zone again. In that case, youve become incredibly limited because of your past.Your emotions own you, rather than you owning your emotions. When this happens, your personality stops developing, and you become incredibly predictable as a person.Your life becomes quite repetitive. You may continue to develop mentally and cognitively, such as learning from books and school. You could have a head full of facts and knowledge, which are easily acquired in an information world. But emotionally, you are stone. You are frozen at the same level you were when you got hurt.If we never resolve the emotional pain, then we are forever damaged and crippled in our lives. As a result, we begin avoiding situations that would make us vulnerable to experiencing similar pain again. We become frozen in our development as a human being, unable to embrace and fully take-in new experiences. An easy way to examine your level of emotional maturity is how often you step outside of your comfort zone. If its rare to put yourself into the vulnerable position of not knowing the answers or how things will turn out, then you likely have trauma from your past that is holding you hostage - emotionally - and stopping you from fully developing your potential as a person.Research shows that the older people get, generally, the less open they are to having new experiences. In this article, Im going to break-down the science of how to overcome all emotional blocks and become emotionally-free.When you become emotionally free and flexible, you become far mora dynamic and fluid as a personality. Your ability to learn and adapt skyrocket.Your lifestyle and interests will continually change because you have the freedom to take on new things. Youre no longer hostage to your emotions.Youre not afraid of getting hurt.Youre not afraid of being wrong. In the words of Dr. Susan Jeffers, you know that regardless of what happens, You can handle it. Hence, she says we should, Feel the fear and do it anyway.According to educator Sir Ken Robinson, If youre not prepared to be wrong, youll never come up with anything original. One of the primary reasons many people dont view themselves as creative is because art and creativity are emotional and vulnerable experiences. You have to put yourself out there. You have to try something that might fail.As a result, many people discard the idea altogether, claiming that some inherent part of their personality or genetics is simply not creative. This isnt true.Extreme creativity is available to anyone who is emotionally flexible and healthy. In fact, creativity is often the doorway to emotional freedom, because, through art and creativity , a person can courageously put themselves out there, and that very act of courage shifts a persons relationship with their emotions and their past.Shifting your relationship with your emotionsIts important to note that when it comes to healing suppressed pain or trauma, that you dont have to sit on someones couch and re-hash the past.Instead, you need to courageously move forward in your life.As you step outside of your comfort zone, you will experience the stress-response - fight, flee or freeze. Being out of the comfort zone is a beautiful experience because it is entirely physical and emotional. Its a full-on sensory experience - something many people stop experiencing as they grow older. The main reason this somatic experience arises is that when youre out of your comfort zone - or in a new situation where you dont fully know how things will turn out - youre in a state of uncertainty. Many psychologists argue that uncertainty is the foundation of all fears. This makes complete sense because our brains are actually designed to predict the outcomes of our behavior. Therefore, when were in a new situation, all sorts of physical and emotional red lights start to signal - our stress response. What our brain is telling us is that were in uncharted territory. It is your relationship with THIS EXPERIENCE - your stress response while dealing with new things - that reflects your level of emotional maturity. When you re-establish this relationship, you actually change your memories of the past. But you only change your memory of the past if you dont freeze up. Because undoubtedly, the act of stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying something new may trigger negative emotions and memories from the past.Youll try to sabotage yourself. But instead, you want to be psychologically flexible, which means you fully take in the experience, and move forward toward your goal anyway. In other words, you feel the fear and do it anyway. What youll quickly realize is that yo u can do hard things. You can handle it.Even if things fall unbekannt or dont work out the first time, you can figure out. You can commit to big things and you can keep those commitments, regardless of what you have to learn and become along the way.You can do it.This is how confidence is developed. But theres more. This is also THE ONLY WAY a person can become fully self-actualized.Breaking-down the process of self-actualizationAccording to Abraham Maslow, self-actualization is the emotional state of a person who is in a position to achieve their highest potential. They have had all of their base needs - physical, emotional, and relational - met. They are a healthy, happy, and mature human being.Having a healthy sense of self-esteem is great. But self-actualization is something totally different. You need far more than self-esteem to become self-actualized.There are lots of people out there who feel good about themselves but arent willing to pay the emotional price of expanding their personality. You cannot become self-actualized if youre comfortable where you are.According to Maslow, a key requirement to becoming self-actualized is having what he calls, peak experiences. He defined peak experiences as rare, exciting, oceanic, deeply moving, exhilarating, elevating experiences that generate an advanced form of perceiving reality, and are even mystic and magical in their effect upon the experimenter.Peak experiences are those moments that stretch and shift your perspective of yourself and reality. As Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. said, A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions. The only way to have your mind stretched is to step outside of your comfort zone and have a new experience. In other words, peak experiences are simply those moments where you go through deep experiential learning. These moments of deep learning and transformation leave you in a state of awe, wonderment, and gratitude. You need to have these experiences regularly in reservierung to reach a state of self-actualization.Actually, you need to make having soul-stretching experiences your normal way of life. Because once this becomes your way of life, then you are completely emotionally-free and flexible. When you are emotionally free and flexible, then you as a person also become free and flexible. This doesnt mean that you no longer experience emotions or fears. Rather, it means that you are completely fine experiencing whatever is required to achieve what you believe you should, or what you believe is right.Youre no longer constrained by your emotions, and thus, youre no longer STONE. Instead, youre highly fluid and flexible, even spontaneous.Breaking the process down into bite-sized stepsCourage is the Gateway. This is where you start to see life as challenging and exciting instead of overwhelming. - Dr. David HawkinsWherever you are in your life, it will require courage to get to the next levelCourage means you proactively face risks and uncertainty in order to achieve a noble and worthwhile endCourage is ALWAYS the gateway to the next levelAs you courageously step into the unknown, youll experience the stress-response - flight, flee, freezeYou experience the stress response because your brain is designed to predict the outcomes of your behavior, and when youre in a totally new situation, you cannot fully predict what will happenUncertainty is the foundation of all fearsThe only way to truly be free is to embrace the uncertainty of moving forward in your life - of not knowing exactly how things will turn out yet remaining committed to your values and purposeBecoming flexible and successful while outside of your comfort zone is known as emotional flexibility or having a tolerance for ambiguityAs you step outside of your comfort zone and successfully move forward, youll have peak experiences which will stretch your perspective of yourself and even of realityThe more peak experiences you have, the more emotional ly flexible you will becomeAs you have new experiences, your memory of the past will changeYoull no longer be bound by your pastAll trauma or suppressed emotions will be goneYoull be healedYou heal yourself not by going backward but going forward (hence the best defense is offense)Once you get to the point where you are no longer in your own way, emotionally, then you are self-actualizedSelf-actualized people are those people who are willing to be and do whatever must be done to live their values and fulfill their purpose. They act courageously regularly. Daily. They are flexible and powerful. They werent born that way. Instead, they proactively chose, over and over, to become who they are.You can choose to become self-actualized yourself. But one thing is certain. Everything you want is on the other side of fear. You must be bold in your action. You cant be frozen to your past. You have to move forward. This will take courage. It will involve failing a lot and learning a lot.But with each step forward, youll have peak experiences. Those brief windows of time where youre in awe of everything. Life will become more spiritual to you.Youll develop a sense of mission and purpose.Youll stop overly defining yourself and what you can become and what you can do.Your potential will increasingly expand.Youll continuously watch yourself do things beyond what you previously thought was possible.Youll watch as your life continues to take on a new form, and as the goals you set are quickly realized. Are you going to take the journey? Its not easy.It never will be.And the fear is never going to go away. But for this, youre grateful. Because you know that this life is an educational experience. You have the emotional freedom and relational protection to go big.So youre going to go big - whatever that means to you.Ready to upgrade?Ive created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. What HR Experts are Saying About Photo on Resume in 2018
What HR Experts are Saying About Photo on Resume in 2018What HR Experts are Saying About Photo on Resume in 2018When it comes to resumes, theres probably no greater dispute than whether to include a photo on the resume or elend. Some say, if its a professional photo which goes well with the resume itself then sure, why leidlage.Whats more, most recruiters will google youanyway and check your social media profiles. Which means theyll binnensee what you look like eventually. It also depends on a country. In many parts of the world, everybodys expected to include a photo on their resume. In others, hiring managers would say its unacceptable. They rightly think it only increases the possibility of discrimination and unconscious bias against the applicant.Lets take a look at some of the most frequent arguments regarding photos on resumes.1. Argument Hiring managers will google you anyway so theyll eventually see what you look like. Most recruiters today google every job candidate and check th eir social media profiles. This presents you with two kinds of approaches.First, you might as well add the photo to your resume because thell google you anyway.Either that, or you can opt NOT to include your photo on the resume. The same reason- theyll google you anyway. Your resume should be, after all, about your skills, education, experience and not about looks. Strictly speaking, your appearance is not relevant for the job position, unless youre applying for a modelling or acting job.2. Argument It steers the recruiters attention away from the important stuff. Hiring managers only spend 6 seconds on each resume. You only have a very limited amount of time to sell your skills and competences. Examining your photo, no matter how good-looking you are, might take their attention away from the important details about your work experience, skills and knowledge.Use that precious time better than giving the hiring manager a chance to concentrate on your photo.Or would you like to get hi red mostly for your good looks?3. Argument Photo on resume might cause discrimination. The majority of HR experts agree that a photo on resume can lead to discrimination, bias and favoritism. Its not always the recruiters fault, they might discriminate unconsciously.Humans are visual beings and we instinctively make judgments about people based on their looks. We oftenmakejudgments subconsciously, without a clear intention to do so.But in the job market, where people should stand out based on their accomplishments and abilities alone, why allow for a chance of being judged based on ones race or looks?Apart from ones appearance, name, age, gender or even home address could also trigger subconscious biases. In some countries, HR departments will discard all resumes with photos in order to avoid any possible accusations of discrimination or bias.On the other side, in some other countries, having a photo on the resume is a must. In the end, do whatever is customary in your local job marke t.READShould You Write Your Resume in 1st or 3rd Person?4. Argument Ones looks are not relevant to the job position. Okay, you might be hot. Why notgain some extra points by showing off your picture then? Despite of what weve just said about unconscious biases, you should consider one more thingDoes your appearance bring any value to the job youre applying for?You have to consider for what job positions it is relevant and for which not. There are plenty of positions where looks matter, such as customer service jobs, modeling or acting jobs, brand ambassador/representative jobs, etc. Its up to every applicant to evaluate where its suitable and where not. When theres no legitimate reason why looking hot might be an asset to the job, we advise you not to include it.5. Argument Photo on resume might potentially work against you. If you decide to include a photo on your resume, make sure its one that does you justice. It should be a professional, passport-style headshot. Also, photos on re sumes can confuse the ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) that some companies use to filter resumes. This software automatically scans and pans your resume for keywords and a photo could potentially hinder this process. This might cause your resume not to be accepted. You dont want that. Be aware of this when applying for a job in large corporations- they get hundreds of resumes daily and employ the ATS in order to speed up the process of hiring new people. Also, you should keep in mind that in some countries its normal to add photos to resumes while in others its unacceptable. In continental Europe, for instance, its a common practice to put photos on CVs, but in other parts of the world such as Australia, India or the UK, the same practice is seen as highly inappropriate. So, even with the best of intentions, a photo can eventually work against you.Our conclusionAll in all, experts agree its better NOT to include a photounless its a position that in any way requires you to look good o r unless youre applying for a job in a country where it is specifically advised to do so. If you want to include it, then just do it. But the global job market is inclined to a non-discrimination policy so the habit of including photos on resumes is slowly becoming outdated. Most importantly, your knowledge, skills and competence are there to speak for you, not your looks. The most reputable and professional recruiters know this and will consider you only on the basis of your skills and value you could bring to the company. In a nutshell, we think including aphoto on resume is useless because 1. The hiring managers will google you anyway.2. The purpose of a resume is to get you an interview. Get noticed for your skills and qualities, not looks. There are all sorts of designs in Online Resume Builder, with or without a photograph. You can choose one that suits your position and country the best. Perfect resume and cover letter are just a click away.Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments
